The container revolution did for general cargo liner shipping as what supertankers did for world oil transport: it completely changed the picture.
The C.Y. Tung Group was among the first of the shipping concerns to introduce container services to the Far East.
In 1969, C.Y. Tung decided to convert the ex-liberty ships from the general cargo ships into the fully cellular container ships in Hong Kong.
The first one was S.S. Geh Yung [ ]. She was later renamed S.S. Hong Kong Producer
and deployed to the transpacific service between Far East and U.S. West Coast on November 1969. Her capacity at that time was only up to 300 Twenty foot
Equivalent Units (TEUs).
